It all started just before Easter four years ago…
Daddy was at the feed store picking up dog food and fell in love with a duckling alone in a trough. We have a pond right behind the house, so I thought “why not?”. The gentleman at the store pointed to the sign that said I must by 6 of something, so 5 chickens and a duck later we had our first “farm animals”.
Shortly thereafter, the kids wanted to hatch baby chicks. So, back to the feed store for a styrofoam incubator. Before I realized it, we had 80 or so hatched. Months later, we were giving eggs away. Mommy suggested we try out going to a farmer’s market.
After we learned a lot…and lost a few hens…got our first restaurant and retail egg customers, Mommy wanted to try raising a few pigs. With extensive research we decided that the Red Wattle breed was the best choice. It started with six. We birthed our first litters and bought a boar from a different farm. We learned they eat a lot, however, they do put the calories to good use. Nine months or so from birth to 250 lbs. is pretty cool. We rotate the pigs in outdoor pastures and birth our own litters, now.
Pigs aren’t the way most people imagine them. Yes, they do use mud to cool off, but otherwise they are clean and very smart.
We are now raising chickens, pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, and our own children, too!
You can find us selling our farm products at the Brazos Valley Farmer's Market Saturdays from 8am-12pm. Come by and say hello!
